Beginning: Bella Bear could not wait for Christmas. "Is it Christmas yet?" she asked her mama in the morning. "Not yet, my little honeycake," Mama Bear would say. The presents were already under their little pine tree, wrapped in crinkly paper. One box was just for Bella. It was small and shook with a soft rattle-rattle sound. "What could it be?" Bella wondered all day long.

Middle: That night, Bella couldn't sleep. The moon was bright, and the little box seemed to call to her. "Maybe just a tiny peek," she thought. She crept out of her bed, her paws going soft-pat, soft-pat on the wooden floor. She found the present and with one impatient paw, she tore a tiny corner of the paper. Riiip! She peeked inside… but she couldn't see anything in the dark. Disappointed, she went back to bed. The next day, she felt a little bit guilty. The surprise was partly spoiled.

Ending: On Christmas morning, Mama Bear handed her the present. "I see a little bear was too impatient to wait," she said with a gentle smile, pointing to the torn corner. Bella's cheeks felt warm. She opened the rest of the gift. Inside was a beautiful wooden rattle carved by her papa, with their family's initial on it. It was lovely, but the best part was when her mama said, "The real gift of a present, my dear, is the happy feeling of waiting for it together." Bella shook her new rattle, and the sound was sweet, but the hug she gave her mama was even sweeter. She learned that the magic of a surprise is best when shared.
