Not all butterflies are born with patterns on their wings. That's where Coralbrush comes in. Coralbrush was a fairy artist, and her job was to paint the newborn butterflies.

She had tiny pots of paint made from sunshine-yellow, crushed-berry-red, and morning-sky-blue. When a new butterfly with plain, white wings would land on her flower-palette, she would dip her paintbrush (made from a single dandelion fluff) into the colours.

With a gentle touch, she would paint spots on one wing, and stripes on the other. A swirl here, a dot there. When she was finished, the butterfly would flutter its newly decorated wings, thank her with a little dance in the air, and fly off to show the world its beautiful colours.

The design is excellent for ages 3-5. The huge, simple shapes on the butterfly's wings are the main activity, offering a large canvas for creativity without overwhelming a child. It's your turn to be the butterfly painter, just like the fairy! Look at the big butterfly with the empty shapes on its wings. You can color the circles on one side and the stripes on the other. What colors will you choose? You can make it the most beautiful butterfly in the whole garden! Don't forget to give the kind fairy some lovely colors, too. Have fun filling in all the white spaces inside the black line borders!

Coloring Page Printing Tips

Print on smooth, bright white paper to make the colors look their best. This page would be great to print multiple times so your child can experiment with different butterfly pattern colorings. Use standard print settings for clear, dark outline strokes.

Recommended Tools

A pack of multi-colored colored pencils is perfect for this activity, allowing the child to carefully color in the different spots and stripes. Washable markers are also great for bold, vibrant wings. For a mixed-media approach, crayons can be used for the fairy and markers for the butterfly.
