Coloring page story

Barnaby was the only owl in the forest who flew backward. When everyone else swooshed forward, Barnaby shooowed backward. The other little owls would giggle. "You're going the wrong way, Barnaby!"

Barnaby would blush under his feathers. He tried so hard to fly forward. He’d flap, flap, FLAP... and end up looking at where he’d just been.

One evening, a tiny star-shaped firefly named Sparkle got tangled in a sticky spiderweb. He wiggled and jiggled, but he was stuck! All the owls flew past, looking forward, so no one saw him.

But Barnaby did. As he was flying backward, he saw Sparkle’s little light blinking for help. Shooow! Barnaby flew right to the web. With his gentle beak, he snipped the sticky threads. Pop! Sparkle was free!

"You saved me!" buzzed Sparkle. "You saw me because you fly differently!"

Barnaby realized Sparkle was right. His backward flying wasn't wrong—it was his special superpower. From that day on, he flew backward with pride, the official Lookout Owl of the forest.

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

The use of round, soft shapes and a clear, simple composition makes this illustration perfect for 3-5 year olds. The characters are friendly and non-threatening. The large, distinct areas for Barnaby, the firefly, and the web are easy for young children to identify and color, supporting their motor skill development.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

Look, it's Barnaby the hero! He's looking backward to help his friend. What color will you make Barnaby's soft, fluffy feathers? The little firefly is named Sparkle. Let's make him glow with a bright yellow or orange! The spiderweb was sticky, but now it's broken. You can color the big leaf he is near. Great job helping Barnaby!

Coloring Page Printing Tips

Print on standard letter-sized paper. Ensure your printer settings are not set to 'fit to page' if it shrinks the image; you want the large, bold outlines of the owl to be as big as possible for easy coloring. Sturdier paper will hold up well to enthusiastic crayon or marker use.

Recommended Tools

Crayons are excellent for this page as they allow for texture on the owl's feathers. Washable markers will make the firefly look extra bright. Provide a few options and let the child choose their favorite tool to bring this special owl scene to life.
