Coloring page story
Little Fern the Fox was learning how to pounce. Her Grandpa, a wise old fox with a silver-tipped tail, was her teacher. "You must be quiet, little one," he said in his warm, rumbly voice.
But Fern was not quiet. She would get excited and CRUNCH on a leaf. Or SNAP a twig. The little field mice would hear her and scamper away. "I'm no good at this," she sighed, her tail drooping.
Grandpa Fox nuzzled her. "I will tell you the family secret," he whispered. "We do not just listen with our ears. We listen with our paws."
Fern looked confused. "How?"
"Close your eyes," he said. "Stand very still. Feel the ground. Can you feel the tiny thump-thump of a beetle walking? That is listening with your paws."
The Twist: Fern closed her eyes and stood very, very still. She felt the wind. She felt the sun. And then... she felt a tiny, tiny vibration. A tickle-tickle-thump. She opened her eyes, and without thinking, she pounced! She didn't catch a mouse. She landed perfectly on a big, jittery grasshopper, which jumped away with a ZING!
