Coloring page story

It was a very hot day. The sun was a big, yellow ball in the sky. The hydrangea bushes in the park started to feel sleepy and droopy. Their big flower heads began to hang low, and their leaves went all floppy.

A butterfly named Flitter came by. “Oh no!” she cried. “The flowers are too thirsty to give me any nectar!”

A little boy named Sam saw the droopy flowers. He thought they were sad.

Unexpected Twist: Sam’s mom didn’t say they were sad. She said, “They’re just very, very thirsty, Sam! They need a big drink of water.”

Sam got his little blue watering can, filled it up (splash, splish, splosh!), and gave the hydrangeas a long, cool drink. In a little while, the flowers perked right up, standing tall and happy again. Flitter the butterfly came back and had a lovely snack.

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

The cause-and-effect story (thirsty flower gets water and perks up) is a simple concept that 3-5 year olds can easily understand. The positive action of helping and nurturing is a great social-emotional lesson. The distinct objects—boy, watering can, Hydrangea, butterfly, sun—are easy to identify and color separately.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

Coloring Page Printing Tips

This page will print beautifully on regular 8.5x11" paper. To extend the activity, print two copies. Have your child color one with 'droopy' colors (like gray or brown) and the other with 'happy' colors to represent the story's transformation.

Recommended Tools

Washable markers will provide the bold, satisfying colors that fit this cheerful scene. For the water drops, a light blue crayon can create a softer effect. This is a great page for practicing multi-tool use: markers for the main characters and crayons for the sky and grass.
