Coloring page story

It was a very hot day. The big, pink peony in the garden started to feel sleepy. Its leaves went flop. Its big flower head went droop. "I'm so thirsty," the peony sighed. A little boy named Tom saw the droopy flower. "What's wrong?" he asked. He touched the dirt. It was dry and dusty.

"Aha!" said Tom. "You need a drink!" He got his little blue watering can. But where does the water go? Does he pour it on the pink petals? On the floppy leaves?

He remembered his grandpa said plants drink with their feet. So, he poured the cool water on the dirt, right around the stem. Slurp, slurp, slurp went the roots, drinking up all the water.

Unexpected Twist: The flower didn't get better right away. But after a little while, Tom saw the leaves lift up. The big pink head stood up tall again. The flower wasn't drinking with its mouth (the flower), it was drinking with its hidden toes (the roots)!

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

The 'Nature Exploration' style is great for ages 3-5 as it focuses on the gentle interaction between a child and the environment. The visual contrast between the droopy Peony and the helpful action of watering creates a clear cause-and-effect story. The simplified depiction of underground roots makes an abstract concept (drinking with roots) visible and understandable.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

Oh dear, this poor Peony is so thirsty! Can you help Tom give it a drink? You can color the water droplets a nice, cool blue. What color do you think the thirsty flower is? Maybe a pretty pink or a bright red. When you're done coloring, the flower will feel so much better, thanks to you and Tom!

Coloring Page Printing Tips

This page prints well on standard letter-sized paper. After coloring, you can use it as a story prompt: ask your child what other things plants might need to be happy (like sunshine!). This turns a simple coloring sheet into an interactive learning moment about caring for our Peonies and other plants.

Recommended Tools

Crayons are perfect for this page, allowing for both big sweeps of color on the flower and more careful coloring of the water droplets. For a mixed-media approach, use markers for Tom and the Peony, and blue glitter glue for the water droplets to make them sparkle! Always ensure glitter glue is used with supervision.
