Pip often felt lonely in the noisy workshop. While other elves chattered about gears and springs, Pip had nothing to say. So, one afternoon, he wandered out to the reindeer stables. The air was warm and smelled of hay and gingerbread oats.

All the reindeer were happily munching away, except for Blitzen. The mighty reindeer just stood in his stall, his head low, refusing his favorite snack. His antlers seemed to droop.

The stable master elf, Barnaby, was frantic. "I've tried everything! He won't eat! He won't train! Christmas is coming!"

Pip quietly slipped into the stall. He didn’t try to talk to Blitzen or force him to eat. He just sat down on a hay bale nearby and was quiet. He listened. He listened to the wind whistling outside. He listened to the other reindeers' soft chewing. And he listened to Blitzen’s long, slow sighs. Hooooo-shhhhh.

He sat there for a long time. After a while, he started to hum a little tune he’d heard a snow bunting sing during the summer. It was a quiet, gentle melody.

Blitzen’s ear twitched. He turned his great head and looked at Pip with his big, brown eyes. He took a tiny step closer. Pip kept humming. Blitzen took another step. He nudged Pip's shoulder with his soft nose.

Pip stopped humming and just sat. Blitzen let out another sigh, but this one sounded different. Lighter. Then, he turned his head and finally took a small bite of his gingerbread oats.

Barnaby was astonished. "How did you do that?"

"I don't know," Pip said honestly. "I just… listened to him be sad."

Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give someone isn’t a toy or a treat. It’s just being with them when they’re feeling down. Pip wasn't a toy-maker, but he was becoming a wonderful friend-maker.
