Coloring page story

"Everyone can help in the kitchens!" declared Mrs. Claus, her cheeks rosy from the heat of the great ovens. "We need to bake 10 million gingerbread elves!"

Pip was excited. Baking wasn't building. Maybe this was something he could do! His job was to add the sugar to a giant bowl of dough. He lifted the heavy sack marked 'S' and poured it in. The air filled with the sweet smell of spices. WHOOSH! went the giant mixer.

But when the first batch of gingerbread elves came out of the oven, they looked… strange. Grizelda, who was on tasting duty, took a bite.

Her face puckered up as if she’d eaten a lemon. "BLECH! SALT!" she sputtered.

Pip looked at the sack he'd used. In tiny letters under the big 'S', it said 'Salt for preserving'. He had mixed up the sugar and the salt! The entire batch of dough, enough for a thousand gingerbread elves, was ruined.

Pip wanted the floor to swallow him whole. He had created a gingerbread disaster.

As he was about to apologize, he noticed something. The salty, ruined dough was incredibly stiff. While the other elves were throwing it out, Pip took a lump. He rolled it and pinched it. It held its shape perfectly. He molded it into a beautiful snowflake. He made a tiny reindeer. He made a star.

Mrs. Claus came over. "What have you got there, Pip?"

"Mistakes," he said glumly.

"They don't look like mistakes to me," she said, picking up the snowflake. It was hard as a rock and didn't crumble. "You know," she mused, "these would make wonderful, long-lasting ornaments for the Great Hall tree! The mice can't eat them!"

And so, Pip spent the rest of the day not baking, but sculpting. His salty "mistakes" became the most beautiful, inedible decorations the North Pole had ever seen. He learned that even the biggest mess-up can be the start of something new and wonderful.

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

The theme of making something beautiful from a mistake is a valuable lesson for 6-8 year olds. The shapes of the ornaments (snowflake, star, reindeer) are familiar and fun to color. The characters are friendly and the composition is uncluttered, making it an engaging and manageable task.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

Look at Pip's wonderful creations! Even though the dough was a mistake, he made beautiful things. You can color Mrs. Claus's apron with a fun pattern, like polka dots or stripes! The ornaments are for you to decorate. You can make the snowflake a frosty blue, the star a bright yellow, and the little reindeer a warm brown. What color is the dough in the big bowl? You have the power to make this kitchen scene as colorful as you wish!

Coloring Page Printing Tips

This page will look great printed on standard copy paper. To make the ornaments feel extra special, you could print it on tan or light brown paper to make it look like the color of gingerbread dough before your child even starts coloring!
