Coloring page story
After his success with the rocking horse, Pip decided to try painting. He was given a row of wooden dolls with perfectly smooth, round faces. His job was simple: paint a happy smile on each one.
He dipped his finest brush into the cheerful pink paint. He held his breath and drew a gentle curve. But his hand jiggled. When he looked, the doll wasn't smiling. It had a small, thoughtful frown, as if it were pondering a very important secret.
"Oh, tinsel toes," Pip sighed. He tried again on the next doll. This one’s mouth was a little lopsided, like it was trying not to giggle. He tried a third time, and this one looked… sleepy. Not a single one had the perfect, happy smile.
Lila, an elf with braids like twisted candy canes, bounced over. "What's wrong, Pip? You look like your dolls!"
Pip showed her his frowning, giggling, sleepy creations. "They're all wrong," he said sadly.
Just then, a mail-elf rushed in, flapping a letter. "Urgent request from a little girl named Lily!" he announced. "She doesn't want a doll that's always smiling. She writes, 'I want a doll who looks like she's thinking, like me. Or maybe one who looks like she has a funny secret!'"
Lila’s eyes went wide. She looked at Pip's dolls and then back at the letter. "Pip… look!"
Pip read the letter. His heart did a little flip-flop. His "mistakes" were exactly what someone wanted. He carefully picked out the frowning, thoughtful doll and the one with the lopsided, secret-keeping smile. He packed them in a box with extra-soft paper.
That day, Pip learned that not everyone feels happy all the time. Sometimes you feel thoughtful, or sleepy, or secretly silly. And it turned out, there were toys for those feelings, too. Pip just happened to be the only elf who knew how to make them.
