Coloring page story

Deep, deep down in a burrow lined with soft moss, Gus the Groundhog was having a wonderful dream about a giant, tasty dandelion. Suddenly, he felt a rumbling. Thump-thump-thump. It was the sound of all the other animals waiting.

"Is it time?" whispered a little rabbit at the door of his burrow.

Gus yawned a great big yawn. He stretched his short, furry legs and wiggled his nose. He didn't want to get up. He slowly poked his head out. The sun was so bright! And right there on the sparkly snow was a long, dark shape. His shadow!

"Oh, fiddlesticks," Gus grumbled. "Six more weeks of snoozing." He popped back into his burrow, curled into a ball, and went right back to dreaming of dandelions.

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

This design is ideal for ages 3-5. The large, simple shapes and thick outlines cater to developing fine motor skills. The exaggerated, clear emotion of 'grumpy' is easily identifiable for young children, helping them learn about feelings. The core Groundhog Day concept of seeing a shadow is presented in a very simple, cause-and-effect visual.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

Hello, little artist! Let's color grumpy Gus. What color do you think Gus should be? Maybe a nice, warm brown? You can use your favorite crayon to color inside his furry face. The snow all around his home can be left white, or you can add some light blue or sparkly glitter! And don't forget the big, bright sun up in the sky—a happy yellow would be perfect! His shadow on the ground is a fun shape to color in with black or grey.

Coloring Page Printing Tips

For the best coloring experience, print this page on medium-weight paper or cardstock. This prevents markers from bleeding through and stands up well to enthusiastic crayon use. Use your printer's standard or 'normal' quality setting to ensure the black lines are crisp and clear, making this Groundhog Day scene easy to color.

Recommended Tools

Large, chunky crayons are perfect for little hands to grip and control. Washable markers are also a fantastic, vibrant choice—just be sure to put a protective sheet underneath. Colored pencils can be used for more detailed work by older children in this age range. Always supervise to ensure tools are used safely.
