Coloring page story
Pip was a tiny spider with eight wiggling legs and a big, cheerful smile. More than anything, Pip loved to build webs. But he didn’t just build any old web. He played a game while he did it. His favorite game was the Number Game.
Today, Pip wanted to build the best, strongest web in the whole garden. "I will need five strong corners for this web," he chirped to himself.
He climbed to the top of a big, pink rose. He took a deep breath and… ZING! Out shot his first silky thread, landing right on a droopy daffodil.
"That's one!" Pip counted proudly.
Next, he scurried along a green leaf. ZIP! Out shot his second thread, catching on a tall blade of grass.
"That's two!" he wiggled.
He was having so much fun! He swung to a little brown twig. WHOOSH! Out shot his third silky thread, stretching far to a smooth, grey stone.
"That's three!" he giggled.
From the stone, he aimed carefully. PING! His fourth thread flew through the air and stuck fast to a curly fern.
"That's four!" he sang.
Pip looked at his web. It looked big and shiny in the sun. "Finished!" he declared, and he bounced right into the middle.
But the web wasn’t strong. It went wibble-wobble, wibble-wobble. Pip wobbled with it, holding on with all eight legs. "Oh, dear! My web is a wobbly, wobbly mess!"
Just then, a friendly ladybug named Lily landed on the fern. "Hello, Pip! Your web is doing a wobbly dance."
"It is!" cried Pip. "I played the Number Game, but it didn't work!"
Lily the Ladybug crawled closer. "Let's count the corners together," she said in her kind little voice.
So they counted.
"One on the daffodil," said Pip.
"Two on the grass," said Lily.
"Three on the stone," said Pip.
"Four on the fern," said Lily.
Lily looked at Pip. "You said you needed five strong corners, Pip. You only have four. You need one more!"
Pip's eyes went wide. "Oh! One more makes five!"
He took his biggest, deepest breath. He aimed for a strong, sturdy branch above him. And… ZING-A-LING! Out shot his fifth and final thread. It stuck perfectly.
"That's five!" they both shouted together.
Pip bounced in the middle of his new web. It didn't wibble. It didn't wobble. It was strong and still and perfect for catching the morning dew like tiny diamonds.
"Thank you, Lily!" said Pip. "The Number Game is the best game, as long as you remember all the numbers!"
And the two friends sat together on the perfect, five-cornered web, counting the dewdrops sparkling in the sun.
