Coloring page story

Beginning: The sun was shining, the food was packed, and everyone was ready for the best picnic ever. They found a lovely spot on a soft, grassy hill. "Time for the blanket!" said Papa Rex. Mama Stego looked in the basket. She looked behind the basket. She looked under the basket. Her face fell. "Oh, my scales and spikes," she whispered. "I've forgotten the blanket."

Middle: Four dino faces looked at the slightly poky grass. A picnic with no blanket? How could they? The little twigs might poke them, and the ants might tickle their toes. "We have to go home!" said Trixie, looking disappointed. Leo added, "The ground is too itchy." It seemed their picnic day was over before it even started.

Ending: "Nonsense!" declared Papa Rex. "We are dinosaurs! We are clever!" He looked around. Then he started gathering the biggest, softest fern leaves he could find. Trixie found smooth, sun-warmed stones to hold the corners down. Leo found sweet-smelling clover to fill in the gaps. In just a few minutes, they had made their very own picnic blanket out of nature. It was lumpy and bumpy and smelled wonderful. They all agreed it was the best, most comfortable, most dinosaur-y blanket they had ever used.

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

This scene celebrates creativity and problem-solving. For ages 3-5, seeing characters build something from nature is inspiring. The various natural textures (leaves, stones, clovers) are drawn as simple, distinct shapes, which is great practice for identifying objects and coloring within different boundaries.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

They forgot their blanket, but they made a new one from nature! How clever! You can help finish it with your colors. Let's make the big fern leaves a lovely green. The clovers can be green, too, and maybe the stones can be a warm gray. What colors will the happy dinosaur family be? Enjoy making the best nature blanket ever!

Coloring Page Printing Tips

For best results, print this page on medium-weight cardstock to prevent markers from bleeding through. Standard letter-sized paper works well for crayons. Set your printer to a high-quality 'black and white' or 'grayscale' setting to get the crispest lines.

Recommended Tools

This page is perfect for crayons to create different textures for the leaves and stones. Washable markers would be great for making the dinosaurs stand out. Encourage your little artist to notice all the different parts of the nature blanket and give each a special touch.
