Beginning: Stripey was a candy-cane shaped shortbread cookie, with cheerful red and white stripes. He was very proud of his appearance and couldn't wait to be the star of the cookie plate. But as he sat cooling on the windowsill, he saw a tiny field mouse shivering on the other side of the glass, its whiskers quivering in the frosty air. The mouse looked hungry and sad, and all the cheer drained right out of Stripey's stripes. His purpose changed: he wasn’t for the party; he was for the mouse.

Middle: The window was closed tight. How could he get outside? He noticed the small cat-flap on the back door, a dark tunnel to the outside world. It was a long journey. He rolled and tumbled his way off the sill, across the floor, and pushed with all his might against the flap. Creak... POP! He was outside in the biting cold. The snow was up to his stripes. He pushed himself through the crunchy snow, calling out in a voice only a mouse could hear, a faint rustle of sugar. Rustle, rustle!

End: The little mouse, whose name was Squeak, saw the brightly colored cookie moving towards him. He was scared at first, but Stripey just lay still in the snow, offering himself. Hesitantly, Squeak crept forward and took a tiny nibble. It was the most delicious thing he had ever tasted. He nibbled until his little belly was full. Just then, the family’s father came out to get firewood. He saw the mouse, full and happy, and the half-eaten candy-cane cookie in the snow. He didn't shoo the mouse. He smiled a slow, kind smile. He went back inside and told his children, "It seems one of our cookies decided to share some Christmas spirit." Stripey, feeling a bit crumbly but incredibly warm inside, knew he was the best Christmas present that little mouse had ever received.
