Middle: Escaping the plate was easy. The true challenge was the chimney. He saw it from the living room, a tall, brick mountain leading to the sky. He used his pretzel antlers to help him climb the rough fabric of a stocking hung by the fire. Scritch, scratch, heave! He made it to the mantelpiece. Now for the chimney itself. He found a little ledge inside, just above the flames. It was sooty and dark. He waited, his cookie heart full of hope and a little bit of fear. He heard a distant sound of bells. Jingle, jangle, JINGLE!

End: Then, a great WHOOSH! of air and a shower of soot. Two big, black boots landed in the fireplace, followed by a big man in a red suit. It was Santa Claus! Rudi peeked from his ledge, his red nose glowing in the dim light. Santa saw him. "Ho, ho, ho! What's this? A little cookie trying to catch a ride?" Santa's voice was as warm as the fire. He gently picked Rudi up. "You've got the spirit of a true reindeer," he chuckled. He didn't eat him. He placed Rudi carefully in his top pocket. "You can ride along with me tonight." And he did. Tucked safely in Santa's pocket, Rudi felt the swoop and soar of the sleigh, saw the world spread out like a glittering map below, and heard the real reindeer stamping their hooves on the rooftops. When Santa returned him to his own house, placing him right beside the milk glass, Rudi knew his quest was complete. He was just a cookie, but for one magical night, he had flown.
