Coloring page story

Professor Zella was a zebra who loved to ask "Why?" One day, her question was: "Why do the buzzy-whizzy flies bother the lions, and the elephants, and the giraffes, but not us zebras?" It was a great mystery!

Her first guess (her hypothesis) was: "Maybe the flies don't like the taste of zebras." She licked her own stripe. Yuck! "Nope," she said. "We taste like... zebra."

Her second guess: "Maybe our stripes scare them!" She tried to look very scary, making a fierce face. The flies just buzzed around her head. Bzzzz. "That's not it either," she sighed.

She stood very still and watched. A buzzy-whizzy fly tried to land on her friend's back. As her friend moved, the black and white stripes seemed to wiggle and dance. Wiggle, waggle! The fly got confused! It couldn't figure out where to land! It got dizzy and flew away to bother a plain brown wildebeest instead.

Twist: Zella had her "Aha!" moment. The stripes weren't for tasting bad or looking scary. They were a visual trick! The moving patterns confused the flies' eyes. "Our stripes make us dizzy-wizards!" she declared. The mystery was solved!

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

The use of simple symbols like glasses for 'smart' and a lightbulb for 'idea' is easily understood by children aged 3-5. The funny, dizzy flies add a playful element. The clear cause-and-effect visual (stripes causing dizzy flies) makes the scientific concept accessible and memorable.

Coloring Page Printing Tips

Use a 'high contrast' or 'photo' setting on your printer to make the thin lines of the dizzy-marks and glasses very crisp. This page is a great conversation starter about animals, so have it ready for a curious child! A good print will make this zebra's discovery clear and fun.
