Coloring page story

Zizi the zebra did not want her stripes. "Stripes are boring," she said with a pout. "I want spots, like Lily the Leopard!" So Zizi rolled in the mud. Splish, splat, splosh! Now she had brown, muddy spots. She trotted happily, but the sun came out and baked the mud hard. Crack, crunch! "Ouch!" she cried. "Spots are too crispy!"

Next, she found a berry bush and smooshed juicy purple berries all over her coat. Squish, squash, squoosh! "Hooray for purple spots!" she cheered. But soon, all the buzzy bees came to taste her sweet spots. Bzzzz, bzzzz! "Yikes!" she squealed, running away. "Spots are too buzzy!"

She washed off the berries in the river and sat sadly by a tall patch of grass. Just then, a big, sleepy lion peeked out. The lion looked right at Zizi but didn't see her! Her black and white stripes blended perfectly with the tall, shadowy grass. The lion yawned and went back to sleep.

Twist: Zizi discovered her stripes weren't for looking fancy, they were a superpower called camouflage. They kept her safe. Zizi looked at her beautiful, life-saving stripes and thought, "My stripes are the best pattern of all!"

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

The cartoon style with exaggerated, clear expressions helps children aged 3-5 understand the characters' feelings (Zizi's surprise, the lion's sleepiness). The concept of hiding is relatable, and the simple composition with large, distinct areas for the zebra, lion, and grass is easy for them to color.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

Can you find Zizi hiding in the grass? Let's color her in! You can use your favorite colors for her stripes. The tall grass can be green, or maybe yellow because it's so sunny. What color is the sleepy lion? Maybe a friendly yellow or a soft orange. You are helping Zizi stay hidden with your coloring!

Coloring Page Printing Tips

Print this page on standard letter-sized paper. To make it a reusable activity, you can laminate the page and use dry-erase markers. This is a great way to talk about how the zebra blends in with different background colors.

Recommended Tools

Washable markers will make the scene pop with bright colors. Crayons are excellent for practicing staying within the lines of the zebra stripes and the tall grass. Safety scissors could be used by older children with supervision to cut out the characters after coloring.
