Coloring page story
Barnaby Badger was a grumpy old soul who grumbled at Christmas. “Too bright! Too noisy! Humbug!” he’d mutter, pulling his door shut and blocking his ears. He couldn’t remember why he disliked it so much; he just knew it made his heart feel heavy and grey.
One snowy morning, a little rabbit named Willow was hopping by his burrow when she stumbled upon an old, tarnished bell half-buried in the snow. Thinking it was a toy, she shook it. TING-A-LING-A-LING!
The sound drifted into Barnaby’s burrow. It didn't just reach his ears; it reached deep inside his memory. Suddenly, he wasn’t in his dark burrow anymore. He was a young badger, much smaller, standing in a brightly lit clearing. The air smelled of pine and roasted chestnuts. All the forest animals were there, and he was laughing, playing tag with his best friend, a fox named Finley. He remembered a Christmas filled with joy.
Then the memory faded, and a sad one took its place: the day Finley’s family moved far away, right after that happy Christmas. The grey feeling in Barnaby’s heart wasn’t hatred for Christmas; it was the heavy blanket of missing his friend. He had forgotten the joy and only remembered the sadness that came after.
Tears welled in the old badger’s eyes. He opened his door to find little Willow, nervously holding the bell.
“I… I’m sorry if I disturbed you, Mr. Badger,” she squeaked.
Barnaby looked at the cheerful lights twinkling in the forest beyond. For the first time in years, they didn’t look too bright. They looked hopeful.
“You didn’t disturb me, little one,” he said, his voice softer than it had been in years. “You helped me remember.” That evening, for the first time, Barnaby Badger joined the forest feast, sharing stories of a fox named Finley and a Christmas long ago.
