Coloring page story
Finn was a boy in a hurry. He wanted everything NOW! On Christmas Eve, his family brought home the tiniest, saddest-looking Christmas tree from the lot.
“It’s pathetic!” Finn complained, kicking at the rug.
“I wanted a giant one!”
His grandmother smiled and handed him a small, polished box. Inside was a beautiful brass bell. “This is a Growing Bell,” she said. “But be careful what you wish for.”
Finn didn’t listen to the warning. He took the bell to the little tree, which barely reached his chin. "Grow, grow, GROW!" he shouted, ringing the bell with all his might. CLANG-A-LANG-A-LANG!
WHOOSH! The tree shot up! Its branches stretched and widened, knocking over a lamp. WHOOSH! It grew taller still, its top brushing the ceiling and sending down a shower of plaster dust. It was huge! It was magnificent! It was… stuck. The giant tree was wedged so tightly in the living room that they couldn't even open the door.
“Uh oh,” Finn said, his excitement turning to panic.
“Well, Finn,” his father said, trying not to laugh. “You wanted a giant tree. Now what?”
Finn looked at the bell. He tried ringing it backwards, upside down, and softly, but nothing worked. The tree was stubbornly, gigantically stuck. He finally sat down with a sigh. There was no room for presents, no room for Grandma’s chair, no room for anything but pine needles.
“I guess… I guess bigger isn’t always better,” he admitted.
He noticed the bell felt warm in his hand. He looked at the tree again. Its piney smell filled the whole house. He could see a little bird's nest tucked in a high branch that they'd never have noticed on a small tree.
He had an idea. “Let’s decorate it from the outside!” he yelled. The family opened the windows and passed ornaments out, hanging them on the branches that poked past the house. It became the most famous tree on the street.
Finn learned that some things are best when they grow slowly, and that sometimes, the biggest messes make the best memories.
