Coloring page story
Chloe’s heart was heavy. She’d lost the red mitten her Grandpa had knitted for her before he moved away. It wasn’t just a mitten; it was a hug for her hand. She searched everywhere: under her bed, in the messy toy box, and behind the sofa cushions. Nothing.
Her mother gave her a tiny, copper bell on a string. "Grandma said this is a Finding Bell. It chimes when you're close to something you've lost from your heart."
Chloe didn't really believe it, but she held the bell and walked around the house. It was silent. She trudged outside, the cold snow crunching under her boots. CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH. She walked toward the old oak tree at the back of the garden.
Suddenly, a faint sound. Ting…
She took another step. Ting-a-ling…
Her heart started to pitter-patter. She moved closer to a pile of firewood stacked against the tree. Ting-a-ling-a-LING! The bell was singing now!
She knelt and peeked into a gap between two logs. And there it was. Her red mitten. But it wasn’t empty. Curled up inside, snug and warm as could be, was a family of tiny field mice, their whiskers twitching in their sleep.
Chloe gasped. She was about to reach for her mitten, but she stopped. They looked so peaceful. Her Grandpa had made the mitten to keep something safe and warm, and that’s exactly what it was doing.
She didn't have the heart to disturb them. Instead, she gently placed a few sunflower seeds near the entrance. She backed away, the bell falling silent as she left the mitten where it was.
Back inside, she told her mother what she’d found. "You know," her mother said, hugging her, "I think Grandpa would be very proud that his mitten became a cozy home." Chloe thought so too. She had lost a mitten, but she had found a wonderful secret.
