The long dry season had come. The river was just a dusty path. The flowers drooped their heads. "We're so thirsty," whispered the marigolds.

Mama Ella, the leader of the herd, knew what to do. She remembered a secret her grandmother had taught her. She led her family to a dry, sandy spot.

"The water is sleeping down below," she said.

Using her strong feet and mighty tusks, she began to dig. Scrape, scoop, push. The other elephants helped. They dug and dug, deeper and deeper into the earth. The other animals watched, confused.

Suddenly, a little bit of dark, wet sand appeared! Then a little puddle. Then the puddle grew bigger and bigger until it was a small, wonderful well filled with clean, cool water! Mama Ella had remembered where nature kept its hidden treasures. She drank first, then let everyone—from the tallest giraffe to the smallest mongoose—come and have a drink.
