Coloring page story

Flicker was a little firefly whose own light was feeling a bit dim. He was a little bit scared of the dark when his own blinker wasn't bright. One evening, as the sun went down, Flicker felt his light blink weakly. Flick...flicker... The shadows in his mushroom house grew long and spooky. He huddled under a leaf, feeling small. His mom gave him a special paint-by-number set. "This one is for nighttime," she whispered. The paints were pale and milky in the light. The picture was of a moon and five stars. The number for the moon was a creamy white, and the number for the stars was a pale yellow. Flicker carefully painted the big, round moon. Then he painted each star, one by one. Dab, dab, dab, dab, dab. It looked nice, but it didn't seem very special, and the room was still getting darker and darker. He shivered, his own light giving one last, sad little flick. His mom came over and turned off the big leaf-lamp. The room went completely dark. Flicker held his breath. But then... something magical happened. On his paper, the moon began to glow with a soft, gentle light. And one by one, the five stars he had painted began to shine brightly. The paints were glow-in-the-dark! His painting had filled the room with his very own friendly night sky. He wasn't scared anymore. He looked at his glowing stars, and then he looked at his own tail. He took a deep breath and tried to shine. FLICK! His own light blinked back, brighter than before, as if saying hello to the stars he had made. He had learned that even when you feel dim, you can create your own light.

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

This design is perfectly suited to the 3-5 age group. The firefly is a cute, non-intimidating character. The main coloring elements—the moon, stars, and the firefly's light—are basic, satisfying shapes. The comforting theme of creating light in the dark is gentle and empowering for young children who might be afraid of the dark.

Coloring Page Coloring Instructions

Flicker was scared of the dark, but then he made his own beautiful night sky! Let's help him. You can color the moon and stars on his paper with your brightest, most wonderful yellow. And look at Flicker's own light on his tail! Let's make that super bright, too. You can make the mushroom house a cozy color, like a red or a brown. You are making the room feel so safe and bright!

Coloring Page Printing Tips

To really enhance the theme, try printing this on dark blue or black paper! Your child can then use white, yellow, or even metallic crayons and gel pens to color the lights, making them stand out dramatically against the dark 'night' of the paper.

Recommended Tools

Yellow highlighters are a surprisingly fun and effective tool for this page to make the lights look like they are glowing! Crayons and markers work great too. For a final touch, a grown-up can add star stickers to the background of the mushroom house.
