Coloring page story

Professor Hoot was a young owl trying very hard to be wise and serious like his grandfather. He practiced looking thoughtful and saying "Hoo" in a very deep voice. Professor Hoot decided to paint a very wise-looking self-portrait using his new paint-by-number kit. The colors were all very serious: Number 1 was Wise Brown, Number 2 was Serious Black. But Number 3, for the leaves on his branch, was a color called Giggle Green. The box warned: "May cause chuckles!" Professor Hoot painted his brown feathers and his big, serious black eyes. He looked very wise indeed. "Hoo," he said, pleased. Now for the leaves. He dipped his brush into the Giggle Green. The moment the paint touched the paper, he felt a tickle in his tummy. He-he! He covered his beak with his wing. "Must be serious," he told himself. He painted another leaf. Hee-hee-hee! A big giggle escaped. The more he tried to stop, the more he giggled, until he was laughing so hard that tears rolled from his big eyes. "This is not wise at all!" he hooted between laughs. His grandfather flew onto the branch next to him. "What's all this wonderful noise, my boy?" he asked. Professor Hoot tried to hide his giggling face. "I'm trying to be a wise painter, but this green paint is too silly!" Grandfather Hoot looked at the painting, with its serious owl face and its jiggly, giggle-painted leaves. And then he began to laugh, a deep, warm laugh that shook the whole branch. "My dear boy," he said, wiping a tear from his eye. "The wisest thing in the world is knowing how to laugh." Professor Hoot looked at his grandpa, then at his painting, and realized that a wise owl with a happy heart was the best kind of owl to be.

Coloring page Age Appropriateness

The design is fantastic for the 3-5 age group. The exaggerated, clear emotions are easy for children to understand and relate to. The owls are composed of simple, round shapes (body, eyes) that are easy to color. The focus on the two characters on a branch makes the scene uncluttered and approachable.
